How to Split a PDF into Separate Files

A long PDF often contains sections that need to be sent, archived, or reviewed separately. Splitting the document can make sharing easier, but only if you define the page ranges carefully and verify each resulting file.

Choose a splitting method

Split into individual pages when each page is a separate record. Use ranges when a chapter, invoice, or signed section should stay together. For a mixed document, make a short page map first: for example, pages 1–3 for the cover section and pages 4–8 for the supporting material.

Prepare the source document

• Confirm the PDF is the final version.
• Record the total page count.
• Identify pages with rotation, forms, or signatures.
