About this converter

Fuel economy is quoted in different units around the world: liters per 100 kilometers in Europe, miles per gallon in the United States and the United Kingdom, and occasionally miles per liter. Comparing vehicles across these systems is confusing for two reasons: the US gallon and the UK gallon differ in size (3.785 L versus 4.546 L), and distance-per-volume measures (like MPG) behave in the opposite direction to volume-per-distance measures (like liters per 100 km) — a higher MPG figure is better, while a higher liters-per-100 value is worse. This fuel economy converter translates between all the common units so you can compare a European car consumption figure with an American car rating figure. It covers kilometers per liter, miles per US gallon, miles per UK gallon, miles per liter, liters per 100 km, US gallons per 100 miles and UK gallons per 100 miles. The converter handles the reciprocal relationship between distance-per-volume and volume-per-distance automatically, so the math is always on the correct side of the fraction. Use it when buying a car, interpreting specifications in a foreign unit, or comparing the running costs of two vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

The US gallon is 3.785 L while the UK gallon is 4.546 L, so the same car returns a different MPG figure in each.
It is the amount of fuel (liters) used to drive 100 kilometers — a lower number means better fuel economy.
