What is an IP Address Lookup?
An IP address lookup resolves an Internet Protocol address — either IPv4 or IPv6 — into the real-world details attached to it. For public addresses these typically include the approximate geographic region, the internet service provider or hosting company that owns the range, the associated autonomous system number (ASN), and in many cases a hostname that reverse DNS maps back to the address. This tool performs those public database queries for you and presents the results in a clean, readable layout.
How to Use the IP Lookup Tool
Paste or type the IP address you want to investigate into the input box (for example 8.8.8.8 for a public resolver or 2620:fe::fe::fe::fe::fe::fe::fe for an IPv6 example) and press the Lookup button. The tool queries the public IP intelligence databases and shows the country, region, city, latitude and longitude, ISP, organization and ASN where that data is available. For addresses under your own control you can also see reverse-DNS hostnames. There is no sign-up and no limit on the number of lookups.

Limitations
Public IP intelligence databases are approximate: they locate an IP to the owning network block, not to a physical building, so the city shown is frequently the address of the ISP's regional exchange rather than the user. Addresses behind VPNs, proxies and corporate NAT gateways resolve to the exit node, not to the original device. Database coverage also varies by region, and IPv6 allocations are often mapped at a coarser level than IPv4.

What information does an IP lookup reveal?
It generally reveals the estimated country, region, city and coordinates, plus the ISP or hosting organization, ASN and sometimes a reverse-DNS hostname. It cannot identify an individual person.
Why is the city sometimes wrong?
Because IP ranges are assigned to networks, not buildings, the geolocation points to the ISP's or host's regional exchange. Databases estimate location from routing and BGP data, so the city can be hundreds of kilometres away, especially for hosting providers.
Does a VPN hide my IP location?
Yes. When you connect through a VPN or proxy, websites and lookup tools see the exit node's public IP and its location, which hides your real address and often your true region as well.
